Recipe Ingredients:

  • 1 (16 ounce) can refrigerated jumbo buttermilk biscuits
  • 1 (9.6 ounce) package Jimmy Dean® Original Hearty Pork Sausage Crumbles
  • ¼ cup flour
  • 2 ½ cups milk
  • salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

How To Make Sausage Gravy Recipe?

  1. Preheat the oven and bake the biscuits. Preheat your oven to 175°C / 350°F. Arrange biscuits 1 to 2 inches apart on an ungreased baking sheet. Bake until golden brown, about 13 to 15 minutes.
  2.  Cook the sausage. In a large skillet, heat the sausage over medium heat. Stir frequently and cook for about 5 to 6 minutes, or until fully heated through.
  3. Add flour and milk to make gravy. Gradually stir in the flour and cook for 1 minute. Slowly add the milk, stirring constantly, and cook until the gravy thickens and starts to boil. Reduce the heat to medium-low and let it simmer for 2 more minutes. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste.
  4.  Serve the dish. Split the biscuits in half. Place 2 halves on each plate and top with about ⅓ cup (80 ml) of the sausage gravy.

Recipe Tips:

  • Use cold milk for smooth gravy: Adding cold milk gradually while stirring prevents lumps and helps you achieve a creamy, smooth consistency.
  • Don’t skip stirring: Constantly stir the gravy while cooking to prevent it from sticking to the skillet or forming clumps.
  • Season carefully: Taste the gravy before adding salt, as the sausage often contains salt. Adjust seasoning as needed to avoid making it too salty.
  • Bake biscuits just before serving: Freshly baked biscuits are fluffier and pair better with the hot gravy for a perfect texture and flavor combination.
  • Reheat gravy slowly: If reheating, warm the gravy over low heat and add a splash of milk to restore its creamy texture. Stir continuously to avoid burning.

How To Store & Reheat Leftovers?

  • Refrigerate: First, let the leftover sausage gravy cool to room temperature. Then, transfer it to an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 3 days.
  • Freeze: Allow the sausage gravy to cool completely before freezing. Place it in a freezer-safe container or bag and store for up to 3 months. To thaw, transfer it to the refrigerator overnight before reheating.
  • Reheat: Reheat sausage gravy in a skillet over low heat, stirring constantly. Add a splash of milk if needed to restore its creamy consistency.
